DESCRIPTION:
Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) blend hot and cold water. They employ a temperature sensitive element which expands and contracts depending on the temperature of the water entering the valve. This expansion and contraction alters the size of the apertures through which the hot and cold water enters the valve, thereby balancing and controlling the temperature of the water leaving the outlet, e.g. the tap, and so greatly reduces the risk of scalding accidents.
Thermostatic Mixing Valves should ideally be used in all cases where there is a risk of scalding to the user; notably the very young, the very old and those requiring special needs. They are also vital components in (to name but a few): underfloor heating systems, solar powered domestic hot water systems, process control and legionella control. They are fitted to the hot inlet pipe directly before the terminal fitting. They require a hot and cold water supply to work.
Thermostatic Mixing Valves should be fitted at each outlet and no further than 2 meters from the terminal. The length limit is part of current guidance in the UK on the prevention and control of legionella. In addition, the length of any spur to a TMV, from a hot water circulation system should not exceed 5 meters. It can be seen that the length of any pipework run containing water below 55˚C should be kept to a minimum. One minute is a long time to wait and most people would expect to wait perhaps only one third of this time. In order to understand what one minute means in terms of pipe length, this table provides an accurate insight.
